4 things to watch for at Steelers training camp

Article excerpt

The Steelers kick off training camp in less than a month and we are keeping a close eye on the veteran reps as well as the rookie class.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are less than a month away from the start of training camp and with that comes the preseason. We can't wait for the Steelers to land at Saint Vincent College and get to work so we can get a close look at the new Steelers with head coach Mike McCarthy running the show after 19 seasons of Mike Tomlin.

Here are four things we will be watching at training camp.

Veteran workload at practice

With no shared practices scheduled, we expect to see McCarthy save his aging veterans some at practice and instead give those guys a headier workload in preseason games. This flies directly in the face of how Tomlin ran things when he rarely asked his top veterans to play in the preseason at all.

Rookie rotations

The Steelers have four rookies, Germie Bernard, Gennings Dunker, Max Iheanachor and Daylen Everett who are going to be in the fold to either start or be the first guy off the bench at their respective positions. We want to see how these guys share reps with their veteran competition as these position battles play out.

Joey Porter Jr. and his status

Time is running out for the Steelers and Joey Porter Jr. to come to an agreement on a new contract. The team typically imposes a deadline on working on contracts for the end of the preseason, so if there's nothing in place by training camp, look for some sort of holdout from Porter Jr.

The quarterback battle between Will Howard and Drew Allar

Truth be told, we want to see all the quarterbacks this training camp, including Aaron Rodgers and how he looks in McCarthy's offense but it will be the battle for the future between Will Howard and Drew Allar that we will be paying even closer attention to.
