PEKIN, Not once, but twice, Keota was one pitch away from dashing the state tournament dreams of the Pekin baseball team on Tuesday.
The Panthers kept fighting, even down to their final strike, until one last strike at the plate sent Pekin on to the Class 1A district finals.
Henry Adam completed an incredible seventh-inning comeback by hammering a 1-1 pitch from Brennan McGuire over the fence in dead center for a walk-off grand slam, lifting Pekin to a thrilling 6-4 win over Keota on Tuesday night in the Class 1A, District 14 semifinals. The Panthers scored five runs in the final inning with two outs, erasing the 4-1 lead that the Eagles carried into the bottom of the seventh.
Pekin (17-3) heads to Moravia for the Class 1A, District 14 championship game on Saturday. The Mohawks earned a 1-0 lead over the Panthers back on May 27.
Moravia 5, North Mahaska 4
MORAVIA, Kale Moore delivered a game-tying RBI triple to center, scoring Elias Bronson, before scoring the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Casen Woodward rallying the Mohawks in the Class 1A, District 14 semifinals.
Moravia scored three of their five runs on sacrifice flies, taking the lead for the first time in the bottom of the fifth when Blake Ewing drove in Moore on a fly out to center before Carson Seals put the Mohawks on top with a sacrifice fly to brought in Woodward. After allowing two runs to score for North Mahaska in the sixth, Ewing closed out the game striking out two of the three Warhawk hitters in the seventh.
Moravia (25-4) hosts Pekin in the district championship game on Saturday.
Fairfield 14, Mount Vernon 10
FAIRFIELD, Owen Adam blasted a three-run home run at the end of a six-run opening inning as the Trojans closed out the regular season winning a slugfest in the team's final scheduled home game of the season.
Dain Burkhart past Fairfield at the plate, connecting on four hits including a double while driving in a run. Ethan Bisgard added two hits, including a double, to match Aiden Westercamp by driving in two runs and scoring twice in the middle of the Trojan batting order.
Fairfield (18-13) opens postseason play at Williamsburg on Friday in the Class 3A, Substate 5 quarterfinals.
PREP SOFTBALL
Fairfield 15, Keokuk 4
FAIRFIELD, Leah Helmick and Ireland Cranston both connected on home runs for the Trojans, driving in seven combined runs in a Southeast Conference victory to close out the regular season.
Cranston's fourth home run of the season brought in three of Fairfield's five runs in the second inning, opening a 6-1 lead over the Chiefs. Helmick connected on her team-leading 12th home run of the season in the bottom of the third, bringing in three of Fairfield's eight runs during the game-clinching rally.
Maddy Martin added a triple as part of a two-hit night for the Fairfield outfielder, driving in two runs while scoring twice. Faith Jones added two hits, including a double, while scoring twice and driving in one.
Fairfield (17-17, 12-3 Southeast) opens postseason play at home on Thursday against Mid-Prairie in the Class 3A, Region 8 quarterfinals.
Mediapolis 6-18, Davis County 2-5
BLOOMFIELD, Greenley Cummings went 8-8 at the plate for the Bullettes, driving in four runs while scoring four times in the doubleheader sweep to wrap up the regular season.
Halle Husted drove in both runs for Davis County in the opening game with a one-out single to right in the sixth inning. Paylin Lawson delivered a two-run triple to right in the second inning of game two, pulling the Mustangs within 4-3.
Davis County (10-15) opens postseason play at home on Thursday against Washington in the Class 3A, Region 8 quarterfinals.
LITTLE LEAGUE SOFTBALL
Davis County 18, Grandview 2
JOHNSTON, Jalyn McClure went 3-3 at the plate with a double, driving in two runs while scoring two more as the Davis County 12-year-old All-Stars picked up their first state tournament win.
Davis County faces Mahaska American on Wednesday.
Johnston 11, Monroe County 6
JOHNSTON, Elena Stone, Charlotte Judge and Eva Ryan connected on run-scoring doubles for the Monroe County 10-year-old All-Star team on Tuesday during a four-run rally in the second inning that helped lift the District 7 champions to a 5-1 lead.
Monroe County (1-1) continues state tournament play on Wednesday against Mahaska National.
