Wyclef Jean ‘sikes’ notorious Premier League hardman Duncan Ferguson in awkward encounter

Article excerpt

Wyclef Jean encountered Premier League veteran Duncan Ferguson at the 2026 World Cup in an awkward moment that went viral on social media. The encounter, described as Jean "sikes" (a British slang term for faking someone out or getting the better of them) Ferguson, added levity to tournament coverage that has otherwise focused on hydration protocols and off-field controversies. The interaction exemplifies the lighter, warmer tone that has dominated World Cup 2026 despite initial doubts about the event's execution.

The 2026 World Cup arrived under a cloud of doubt, yet the tournament has delivered more warmth than worry at least in relation to all things football.

Beyond the ongoing grumbling about hydration breaks and off-field politics, the mood and coverage around the competition has been positive, and the latest viral moment only added to it.

That moment came after Scotland edged Haiti 1-0, when former striker Duncan Ferguson found himself on the receiving end of a prank from one of Haiti’s most famous supporters.

The culprit was Wyclef Jean, the Grammy-winning musician and proud Haitian, who decided to have a little fun at Ferguson’s expense, seemingly unaware of exactly who he was dealing with.

Wyclef Jean picks the wrong man to tease

For anyone who followed his playing days, Ferguson was no ordinary target. The Scotsman built a reputation as one of the game’s genuine hard men, feared by defenders and famous for a no-nonsense streak that trailed him long after retirement.

Wyclef, it seems, had no idea.

In a clip shared on Instagram, the singer approached Ferguson and extended his hand as if to make peace, then snatched it away at the last second.

He said: “I’ll shake your hand, man… sike! Nah man, you messed up. You guys done cheated on me, you know we should’ve won that game. The referee, you set up the game. No!”

To his credit, Ferguson took the ribbing in good spirits. The Haitian circled back moments later to offer a proper handshake, which the big Scot accepted with a smile.

The presenter, clearly enjoying the exchange, promised viewers she would explain exactly who Ferguson was during the break, hinting that Wyclef might think twice before trying that again.

It was, all things considered, sound advice.
