2026 Iowa football positional preview: Wide receivers
Article excerpt
Iowa's wide receiver room is stocked with youth and promise heading into 2026. The Hawkeyes have built depth at the position through recruiting and development, with several players poised to make an impact after limited action this past season. The unit features a mix of returning contributors and rising underclassmen who have impressed coaches in practice and games. With key departures at other positions, the receiver group could anchor the offensive attack and help new or returning quarterbacks spread the ball efficiently downfield. The program's recent recruiting classes have added athleticism and size to the room, creating multiple options for playcalling diversity.
Outside of the quarterback position, no group on the Iowa football roster has faced more criticism than the wide receivers recently.
The Hawkeyes have been searching for consistent contributors in that room for over five years now. Internal options have failed to develop. External options have flamed out. The lack of wide receiver production was a huge reason why Iowa had one of the worst offenses in college football under Brian Ferentz.
Now, entering the 2026 season, hope springs eternal for that position group. There's an intriguing mix of returning veterans and exciting newcomers that will need to step up to support a young quarterback. Who's in line to start? And who's flying under the radar as the Summer begins?
This is the third part of my Iowa football positional preview. We previously went over the quarterback and running back rooms. Now it's time to get started with the wide receiver position.
Projected starters: Reece Vander Zee, Dayton Howard, Tony Diaz
2025 stats: Vander Zee- 15 receptions, 219 yards, 2 TD's. Howard- 8 receptions, 91 yards, 1 TD. Diaz- 67 receptions, 881 yards, 11 TD's (with UT Rio Grande Valley)
Iowa could have a pair of elite outside receiver options to open the season. Vander Zee missed the first half of last season with a foot injury, but started to round into form as the year wound down. At 6-foot-4, 215 pounds, he's shown the ability to go up and make some amazing contested catches. Rounding out his overall game and route tree will be crucial.
Howard is of a similar build to Vander Zee, standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 215 pounds. He's made a few contested grabs as well over his Iowa career and will have a huge opportunity in 2026. Hawk fans have seen a bit more of a route tree from Howard, and that will need to continue to improve next season. The raw talent is there. Howard just needs to translate that in-game.
One of the newest and most exciting additions to the wide receiver room is Diaz. The sophomore was explosive at UT Rio Grande Valley in 2025 and has impressed in camp, according to reports. He's more of a slot receiver, coming in at 5-foot-11, 176 pounds. He should fit perfectly on the inside with Vander Zee and Howard occupying the outside receiver roles. The future is bright for Diaz in Iowa City.
Projected backups: Jarriett Buie, KJ Parker, Evan James
2025 stats: Buie- Missed season to injury. Parker- 3 receptions, 18 yards, 1 TD. James- 65 receptions, 796 yards, 7 TD's (with Furman)
While the starters in the wide receiver room are more of a known commodity, the backups could be a question mark. Buie had nine catches for 94 yards as a sophomore in 2024, but missed all of last season with an injury. His role in the offense next season is still up in the air. Parker didn't see much action as a freshman in 2025. The sophomore was highly touted coming out of high school and will need to prove himself this Fall.
Just like Diaz, James comes to Iowa after posting big numbers at the FCS level. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound sophomore is a similar player type to Diaz, which could limit his snaps in 2026. However, if there's an injury or a slow start from someone, Tim Lester could opt to give the Furman transfer a bigger role than expected.
Other options
Sophomore Jackson Naeve: Didn't accumulate any stats in 2025. Transferred in from Iowa Western Community College. Similar story and build to Kaden Wetjen. Will have a great chance to be the starting return specialist.
Sophomore Lance Beeghley: Transfer from SMU. Sophomore didn't play with the Mustangs. Has ideal size (6-foot-2, 194 pounds) but needs to prove he can produce on the field. Could be a role for him in 2026.
Redshirt freshman Terrence Smith: Didn't play in 2025. 537th-best prospect in the 2025 recruiting class. 6-foot-3 with tons of talent. Might have the most potential of any projected backup on the roster.
