Risk threshold for kidney disease confirmed by more accurate measurement
Article excerpt
Researchers from Karolinska Institutet and Leiden University Medical Center have validated the diagnostic thresholds used to identify chronic kidney disease, confirming they genuinely signal heightened risk of serious illness. Their study, published in JAMA, also found that combining two standard blood tests, creatinine and cystatin C, provides more accurate kidney function estimates than either marker alone. The findings support current clinical practices while suggesting a simple refinement that could improve diagnosis.
