We chose the Teknor Apex Zero-G as our top pick for its ultra-lightweight design and exceptional durability. Weighing just a fraction of traditional hoses, the Apex Zero-G can be easily maneuvered around gardens and patios, significantly reducing strain on the arms and back.

One of the most impressive features we noted was the Zero-G hose’s kink-resistant technology. We observed a steady water flow throughout our testing, even when we twisted or looped it, which often creates issues with other models. It’s also built to last. The flexible garden hose features a rugged, abrasion-resistant outer cover that withstands being dragged across rough surfaces without damage.

However, every product has its drawbacks. While the Apex Zero-G gardening hose is easy to store and less cumbersome to handle, we noticed it vibrated and did not maintain consistent pressure when we attached a watering wand, which is unfortunate since we prefer using a wand. Conversely, with a trigger-style sprayer, it performed well. Another drawback is that its lightweight build may feel flimsy compared to heavier-duty hoses, raising concerns about long-term durability under harsh conditions.

What our tester says: “The Zero-G is built to last. It has an excellent balance of functionality and ease of use, which made it a fast favorite for efficient and comfortable gardening in our tests.”, Debbie Wolfe, Product Reviews tester and writer

This Flexon hose is designed for casual gardening and light watering tasks. It’s a practical choice for small yards and gardens, offering a balance of functionality and ease of use. The hose features a standard ⅝-inch diameter and a variety of lengths to choose from, making it versatile for various watering tasks.

We found the Flexon to be quite a flexible hose, making it easy to maneuver around corners and outdoor furniture without kinking. It’s also lightweight, reducing strain during prolonged gardening activities. However, during testing, it leaked from the coupling at both ends when we had the water on at full flow. When we attached the hose to a rain barrel, the couplings did not leak. As a light-duty hose, it does not withstand heavy use or high water pressure, and its durability could be a concern over time.

Still, the Flexon hose offers good value for the price. It’s a cost-effective short garden hose for those who need a simple, no-frills hose for basic watering tasks.

This soaker hose from Rocky Mountain Goods is designed for efficient water management in gardens. This heavy-duty soaker hose is engineered to save up to 70 percent of water by allowing it to seep slowly into the soil directly at the root zones of plants. It features a double-layer design that ensures durability, as well as a consistent drip that promotes healthy plant growth without wasting water or overspray.

We tested the soft garden hose in our raised garden bed, where it performed admirably. We were pleased to find no leaks or punctures in the hose materials, which was a testament to its durability. However, it’s worth noting that the hose does feature plastic couplings, which, in our experience, may not last as long as metal couplings. Despite this, the hose’s overall performance and durability are impressive.

This hose is made with high-quality ultraviolet-stabilized FDA-grade polyurethane, ensuring durability and safety for drinking water. This hose is manufactured in the U.S. and has solid machined brass fittings that enhance its premium feel and functionality.

We appreciate this hose’s lightweight design, which makes it very easy to handle and store, especially in tight spaces like porches or patios. The coil design prevents kinking and tangling, common issues in many garden hoses. However, it has limitations in length and flexibility compared to traditional hoses, which could be a drawback for some users. We found it perfect for use on our deck and liked how easily and neatly it tucked away into a large planter when not in use.

This portable hose has a compact, easy-to-handle design that maintains quality and safety. It’s ideal for those who need a reliable, collapsible garden hose that’s easy to handle and store.

Testing the Hoselink retractable hose reel was quite a revelation, it showed us how easy it can be to manage garden watering. This hose boasts an 82-foot length that retracts smoothly into a compact wall-mounted reel, which is ideal for our tester’s busy garden space. The retractable mechanism simplifies the typically cumbersome task of winding the hose, making it convenient and quick to store.

At 30 pounds, it was the heaviest of all the hoses we tested, but it extends and retracts seamlessly, offering great flexibility and efficiency without the burden of lugging around a traditional hose. This heavy-duty garden hose feels robust, especially with its ability to handle various water pressures without trouble. However, it does not accommodate regular lawn sprinklers and tap attachments without specific adapters, limiting its out-of-the-box versatility.

Overall, this is a high-quality garden hose thanks to its user-friendly design and reliable performance.

Our Ratings

Maneuverability5/5Portability5/5Durability4.8/5Value5/5

After testing both this length and the 25-foot version for our best expandable hoses guide, we couldn’t resist including the Pocket Hose here as well, it’s just that great. As a flexible expansion garden hose, it eliminates the bulk of a traditional hose by stretching to its full length when filled, then collapsing back down for easy storage. Although our tester has an underground sprinkler system, she still gets a few dry spots in her yard, and using this collapsible garden hose to reach them has been much easier than dragging around a standard model. Because it also has a 360-degree swivel connector the brand calls “Pocket Pivot,” it’s simple to attach to the spigot that sits under her deck as well as the easy-to-access one on the side of her house.

If you’ve ever used an expanding hose, you might have concerns about durability. But after 2 solid months of testing, the Pocket Hose’s 3-layer latex core, tear-resistant outer jacket, and anti-burst reinforcements all seem good as new. That said, it’s likely less heavy-duty than a rubber hose, so it’s smart to avoid dragging it across rough surfaces or letting it sit out for long periods in extreme conditions. Still, it’s virtually impossible for it to kink, and the included hose nozzle is one of the nicest we’ve ever used. It has 10 spray patterns and a conveniently placed on/off lever that lets you control the flow without having to head all the way back to the spout.

What our tester says: “I’ve been watering dry spots in our lawn with this hose for over 2 months now, and I absolutely love it. It’s so lightweight that moving it from place to place doesn’t feel inconvenient at all, and it’s incredibly easy to collapse for storage between uses.”, Michelle Larson, Product Reviews tester and writer

Our Ratings

Maneuverability4.5/5Portability4/5Durability4.8/5Value4.5/5

As one of the heavier hoses on this list, this hybrid model from Giraffe Tools is a good cross between a strong standard rubber hose and a lightweight vinyl or PVC one. Its rubber-and-polymer construction makes it relatively easy to carry around the yard, yet it still feels durable enough for heavy-duty use. That blend also makes it abrasion-resistant, highly unlikely to kink, and flexible enough to handle both hot and cold weather, meaning it should hold up well from season to season without the need for repair.

In our tests, one of our favorite features of this pick was its swivel handle, which makes it super easy to twist onto a faucet, nozzle, or sprinkler without fighting the fitting. That doesn’t just eliminate frustration, it also makes it more durable since lower-quality hoses tend to develop leaks right at those connection points. And if 100 feet seems excessive for your needs, this hybrid hose also comes in seven other sizes, including 3, 5, 10, 15, 25, 50, and 75 feet.

Our Ratings

The Bionic Steel metal garden hose is built for people who want a 100-foot-long water hose that can take a beating without being a total beast to move. Its 304 stainless steel construction makes it especially rugged, and the fact that it doesn’t rust in wet weather or kink when dragged around trees, corners, and other obstacles means it’s much more user-friendly than you might initially think.

In fact, this hose surprised us more than the expandable ones we’ve tested that literally shrink and grow depending on whether they’re full of water or not. Even at 100 feet (it also comes in 25-, 50-, and 75-foot lengths), it felt remarkably lightweight, was easy to move, and simple to coil. Its aluminum crush-resistant fittings and stabilizer collar make for strong connection points, and it comes with a simple twisting nozzle that transitions from a steady stream to a wide mist. That nozzle is made of plastic, however, so while you may opt to keep the hose itself outside year-round, you probably won’t want to take that same approach with the nozzle.

What our tester says: “I’ve never used a metal garden hose, but I was incredibly impressed by this Bionic Steel one. It was a lot lighter than expected, and I love that it’s durable enough to hold up in changing weather.”, Michelle Larson, Product Reviews tester and writer

How We Tested the Best Lightweight Garden Hoses

Testing Stats

Products tested 10

Time spent testing 8 hours to 2 months

Tests performed6

Price range$10 to $230

To find the best lightweight garden hoses, we put them through a series of real-world tests designed to measure their durability, ease of use, and overall performance. To assess durability, we stress-tested them by dragging them over different surfaces and exposing them to extreme temperatures. We measured ease of use by evaluating weight, flexibility, and kink resistance, and our performance tests included checking water flow rates and, if applicable, spray patterns.

We then scored each model using a detailed rubric, which allowed us to separate the models worth your money from those better left on the shelf.

FAQs

Now that you’ve read up on some of the top lightweight watering hoses available today, you might have a few more questions on length, thickness, or lifespan may linger. The following answers can help.

Q. Does hose length affect water pressure?  Yes, hose length affects water pressure. The longer the hose, the more friction and drag the water must overcome as it travels down the length of the hose, reducing water pressure.

Q. Is hose thickness important?  Yes, as with length, the thickness of the hose can also impact water pressure. As thickness increases, the hose diameter can decrease, reducing water pressure.

Q. How long will my lightweight garden hose last?  A lightweight garden hose typically lasts between 5 and 10 years.

Q. What’s the best way to store a garden hose? The best way to store a garden hose is by coiling it on a hose reel (such as this one from Liberty Garden) or a hanger to prevent kinks and tangles.

Q. Are garden hoses safe to leave out in winter? No, generally speaking, it’s not a good idea to leave a garden hose outside in the winter. While rubber and stainless steel models are designed to withstand harsh conditions, if there’s water in their bodies or fittings, the hose can still be damaged when that water freezes. If you absolutely must leave your hose outside year-round, be sure to disconnect it and drain it completely.

Q. What are garden hoses made of? Garden hoses are typically made of vinyl, rubber, polyurethane, or hybrid layered materials. Rubber is generally the most durable, while reinforced hybrid hoses tend to provide a good blend of strength and flexibility.
