San Antonio mayor roasts Charles Barkley over past 'big ol' women jokes
Article excerpt
San Antonio's mayor fired back at Charles Barkley over his decades-old jokes about the city's women, calling out the NBA analyst for comments he made during his playing days. Barkley's "big ol' women" remarks, originally directed at San Antonio fans, have lingered in the public memory long enough for local officials to see an opportunity for some good-natured ribbing. The exchange marks a moment where a sports figure's past casual remarks get revisited and challenged, even if years have passed. It's unclear whether Barkley responded directly, but the mayor's comments suggest San Antonio isn't letting the slight fade quietly into history.
NBA great-turned-broadcaster Charles Barkley finally got his comeuppance on Wednesday night for all his sarcastic comments about "the women of San Antonio."
Barkley's long-running gag about "big ol' women" in San Antonio was bound to get him in trouble eventually, and the mayor of San Antonio, Gina Ortiz Jones, gave him a dose of his own medicine on live television ahead of Game 1 for the 2026 NBA Finals.
"I learned a long time ago; you can't teach courage. You can't teach class," Jones said on the San Antonio Inside the NBA set about Barkley... while he was sitting there, per Awful Announcing. "And Mr. Barkley reminds us of that."
To his credit, Barkley got a laugh about it, and you could tell Jones was just messing with him. In fact, she gifted him churros as a perfect way to complete her roast. Maybe this will make the Chuckster think twice before making any more jokes about the wonderful women of San Antonio!
When is Game 2 of Knicks-Spurs?
