Gene therapy prolongs health span and preserves the function of multiple organs in mice during aging
Article excerpt
Researchers at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona demonstrated that a single dose of gene therapy expressing FGF21, a metabolic factor, extended healthspan in aging mice over a 27-month study. Published in Molecular Therapy, the work shows the treatment produced sustained benefits across multiple organ systems and aging-related endpoints. The findings suggest that one-time gene therapy interventions could preserve organ function and quality of life during aging, though the research remains in mice and would require further development before human trials.
