The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating China-based left-wing billionaire Neville Roy Singham regarding alleged financial crimes, Fox News reported Monday. A federal grand jury is investigating a China-based former tech mogul for funding leftist activism throughout the U.S., a source familiar with the matter told the Washington Examiner.
The Department of Justice in the Southern District of New York has issued subpoenas to determine whether Neville Roy Singham or his associates committed financial crimes such as fraud and money laundering, according to a Fox News report that first broke the news. Singham uses an elaborate financial network to support U.S.-based groups that protest against immigration enforcement, U.S. foreign policy, and Israel while defending authoritarian regimes such as China, according to numerous media investigations.
Singham sold his Chicago-based tech company, Thoughtworks, in 2017 before pouring millions of dollars into activist groups and attending Chinese government-linked events, the New York Times and the Daily Beast reported. He is reportedly based in Shanghai and could not be reached for comment.
The DOJ’s subpoenas targeted organizations in Singham’s orbit, according to Fox News. Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton is reportedly leading the probe. Trump has nominated Clayton to serve as Director of National Intelligence, though his nomination has stalled on Capitol Hill so far.
Singham-connected activist groups first gained national prominence after the 2023 Israel-Hamas war broke out and sparked anti-Israel protests around the country. Lawmakers have since questioned whether his political network is violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act by acting in U.S. adversaries’ interests.

The financier’s groups also share overlapping leadership with the Party for Socialism and Liberation, an anti-Western group that has set up dozens of “Liberation Centers” around the country, the Daily Caller reported.
Code Pink founder Jodie Evans married Singham in 2017 in Jamaica, Fox News reported. Evans’s organization often sends protesters to confront lawmakers or executive officials in Washington, D.C., over foreign policy decisions. A DOJ spokesperson declined to comment.
