USA soccer icon Landon Donovan has put United Airlines on blast after experiencing what he said was the “worst travel experience of my life” on Monday.
The 44-year-old, who registered 57 goals and 157 caps for the USA from 2000 to 2014, traveled to Houston to cover Germany’s 7-1 thrashing of Curacao as FOX Sports’ resident analyst. However, he encountered trouble when his flight to Newark, New Jersey, was delayed and rerouted to Dulles Airport outside of Washington, DC.
“I’ve been traveling 100k miles/year since I was 16 and this was easily the worst travel experience of my life, Donovan posted on X. “No transparency, no clarity, and no respect for the passengers who were treated horribly all evening/morning. Absolutely shameful from @united.”
“We were on the runway about to take off, and the pilot was literally ONE minute past his time and decided to take us back to the gate at 3 am,” he added.

Landon Donovan wants United Airlines to issue public apology
After Landon Donovan wrote a series of posts detailing his travel nightmare, United Airlines tried to appease the former USA star by sending him a private message. However, Donovan demanded nothing less than a public apology, a full explanation behind the original delay or diversion, and proper reimbursement for the trouble they caused.
“There will be no private DMs. People want transparency and accountability, so we’re going to do this right here in public. You can start by apologizing to all impacted and then reimburse them all of their expenses with extra flight credit/money for the trouble caused,” Donovan said.
Donovan’s complaints come after Uruguay’s national team also faced flight chaos on the eve of their World Cup 2026 opener against Saudi Arabia, as La Celeste were stuck in Cancun for hours because their plane wasn’t cleared to fly to the United States, causing a massive delay.
