College World Series: No. 3 Georgia advances for first time since 2008
Article excerpt
Georgia baseball advanced to the College World Series for the first time in 16 years, securing a spot in Omaha after a regional tournament win. The Bulldogs, seeded third, have been absent from the postseason's premier event since 2008, when they last made the trip to Nebraska. The return caps a successful season and gives Georgia fans reason to plan travel to the College World Series.
Georgia fans, it’s time to book your flights to Omaha. The Bulldogs are returning to the College World Series for the first time since 2008.
No. 3 Georgia defeated No. 14 Mississippi State in extra innings of Game 2 in the Athens Super Regional in front of a sold-out crowd at Foley Field.
For seniors like Kolby Branch, they weren’t going to let the opportunity to play in Omaha slip away again after they lost in last year’s Super Regionals.
“That hurt me, Tre [Phelps], Coach Wes, Paul Farley, Luke Wiltrakis. Those are the four guys that have been there and then obviously the other coaching staff too. That hurt on our home field. I still remember that. We were just talking about it before,“ Branch said.
”I remember going to bed that night knowing we were going to Omaha, we are going to win this game, and it just didn’t work out. That’s how baseball is. And so now that we got that third game, that second game, and now we are on to Omaha, it’s kind of a full circle moment."
Georgia made it to the CWS Championship Series during their last trip to Omaha and finished runner-up to Fresno State. The Bulldogs’ lone CWS title happened back in 1990.
Ole Miss, Troy and West Virginia previously advanced on Saturday with sweeps. North Carolina and Texas also advanced Sunday. The rest of the CWS field will be decided by Monday afternoon.
