KCMA backs Coalition for Fair Trade in Hardwood Plywood

RESTON, Va., On July 22, after attending a hearing on July 16 at the US International Trade Commission, KCMA CEO Betsy Natz submitted a letter indicating the domestic cabinet industry's support for the efforts of the Coalition for Fair Trade in Hardwood Plywood to create a level playing field.

Natz says the letter was in response to the July 16 testimony by representatives of Masterbrand Inc. and Cabinetworks Group Inc. who opposed the ongoing antidumping and countervailing duty investigations. 

"It is important for the Commission to understand that these two companies do not represent the views of domestic cabinet manufacturers," Natz said in her letter. "As noted, KCMA supports the efforts of the Coalition to combat unfair trade practices."

Natz said that KCMA members use hardwood and decorative plywoods and are "very familiar" with the varieties of hardwood and decorative plywood available on the market and how these products can be and are used in the manufacture of a cabinet. "Our members purchase a wide variety of hardwood and decorative plywood from domestic manufacturers," she said. "We purchase panels in a variety of panel thicknesses, face veneer thicknesses, species, grades, and core types."

She said that the opponents of the plywood trade cases testified that domestic hardwood and decorative plywood is not well suited or less well suited for the manufacture of the box of a cabinet. "This is simply not correct," the letter read. "Most, if not all, of our members purchase hardwood and decorative plywood produced domestically. Many cabinet companies currently make, or have in the past made, their entire cabinets with U.S. made hardwood and decorative plywood, not just for the exposed exterior parts of the cabinet. Domestic hardwood and decorative plywood functions exceptionally well for all cabinet applications, including lamination and drawer bottoms.

"We understand that U.S. hardwood and decorative plywood manufacturers are facing dumped and subsidized imports from Indonesia, Vietnam and China. Our industry has faced similar challenges, which required us to seek trade relief from the U.S. government. We strongly support the efforts of plywood companies to address unfair trade and to create a fair and competitive market in which domestic hardwood and decorative plywood manufacturers can compete on equal footing with imported products."
