U.S. Open 2026: Sahith Theegala nearly decapitates fans with flying club after wild hack out of the fescue

You always have to keep your head on a swivel at the U.S. Open.
The wind has been whipping all week at Shinnecock, but on Sunday something else was blowing in the breeze. Specifically, Sahith Theegala’s club, which went flying out of the 28-year-old’s hands following a wild hack out of the fescue at No. 4. Heads up!

Didn’t Joaquin Niemann get penalized two strokes for this very thing??? JK, JK, JK. Theegala’s case of the butterfingers was clearly unintentional and the lie was so heinous, it’s honestly a miracle he chopped it out at all. The fescue was so thick and Theegala’s ball had settled in it so deeply, that he somehow unearthed another lost ball buried deep beneath his own. Classic U.S. Open stuff.
Theegala went on to double bogey the par-4, dropping him to two-over for the tournament and out of contention once and for all. But hey, on the bright side, at least no one got decapitated.
