Apple TV has officially announced the return of Dark Matter . Fans won't even have to wait much longer before their favorite sci-fi thriller is back with brand-new episodes.
During a special trailer reveal at Apple TV's first-ever Hall H panel at the San Diego Comic-Con, attendees became some of the first to witness the new trailer for Dark Matter Season 2. Apple TV finally unveiled the trailer ahead of the return of the fan-favorite series on Aug. 28 , which will drop new episodes every Friday up through the Season 2 finale on Oct. 30.
Created by Black Crouch and based on his 2016 World Technology Award-nominated novel of the same name, Dark Matter stars Joel Edgerton as Jason Dessen , a physicist who is abducted and sent to an alternate universe. Soon enough, it becomes apparent that this was orchestrated by an alternate version of himself who gave up on having a family to focus on what would become reality-hopping technology, only to decide that he would rather trade places with an unwitting Jason instead.
Alongside Edgerton as both versions of Jason, Dark Matter stars Jennifer Connelly as his wife Daniela and Oakes Fegley as their son, Charlie. Dark Matter also stars Alice Braga as the alternate Jason's girlfriend and the primary's eventual ally, Amanda, as well as Jay Simpson and Dayo Okeniyi.
Since its premiere, Dark Matter has been widely lauded by critics and audiences alike. As of the time of writing, Season 1 holds an 81% "Certified Fresh" rating via review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, as averaged across 59 critical reviews of the series. Dark Matter Season 1 also boasts an 80% audience-generated "Popcornmeter" score on the platform, as averaged across more than 1,000 verified user-submitted ratings.
Per the official announcement from Apple TV, "Season 2 picks up with the Dessens as they settle into a quiet life in a world that finally seems safe, until the unimaginable forces them to run once again. As Jason’s obsession with the Box deepens, Daniela’s growing paranoia pushes her to the brink, and their son Charlie starves for a sense of stability as their family is threatened. Elsewhere, Amanda and Ryan (Jimmi Simpson) join forces in a desperate attempt to find their way home. With Blair (Amanda Brugel) determined to stop him, Leighton (Dayo Okeniyi) relentlessly chases his grand vision of creating a perfect world."
To coincide with the release of Dark Matter Season 2, Apple TV is releasing a deep-dive talk show in the form of Dark Matter: The Official Podcast . Hosted by Couch and executive producer Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry, Dark Matter: The Official Podcast is set to bring listeners "Deeper into the series with a robust roster of cast members, key creatives and industry experts."
The announcement continues, "New podcast episodes will be released alongside each episode throughout the season, beginning with a special catch-up episode ahead of the season two premiere that recaps the key moments from season one and invites fans back into the many worlds of Dark Matter . Each episode will feature an extensive lineup of cast and creative guests... including content creators and authors who are superfans of the show."
