Genetic marker may flag severe IBD earlier in some patients
Article excerpt
Researchers analyzing genetic data from thousands of inflammatory bowel disease patients have identified a genetic marker linked to more severe cases of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. The finding, from the largest genetic study of IBD traits conducted to date, could eventually help doctors identify which patients are at higher risk for aggressive disease progression early on. Scientists hope the discovery will enable more targeted treatment strategies and better prepare patients for potential complications. The research adds to a growing body of evidence that genetic factors significantly influence IBD severity, alongside environmental and lifestyle triggers.
