Phillies outfielder Adolis García out through August with torn lat muscle

Article excerpt

Philadelphia Phillies right fielder Adolis García will miss at least six weeks after tearing his lat muscle, the team announced by placing him on the 60-day injured list. The injury sidelines a key member of the Phillies' outfield during a stretch of games that extends through mid-August. García's absence comes at a critical point in the season as the team navigates roster decisions and potential roster adjustments. The Phillies will need to call up a replacement or shuffle their lineup to fill the void in right field.

Adolis García will be out at least through the middle of August after the Philadelphia Phillies placed their starting right fielder on the 60-day injured list with a torn right lat muscle on Friday, June 12.

While García, 33, was batting just .195 with seven homers in 67 games for Philadelphia, he solidified the right field position for the Phillies after the spring release of Nick Castellanos, who was owed $20 million in the final year of his contract.

García produced four outs above average in his work in right field, and he ranked in the 96th percentile of arm strength, bringing a shutdown element to the Phillies' outfield defense they'd never enjoyed.

He injured his lat in the seventh inning of Philadelphia's game at Toronto on Wednesday when he tried to throw out George Springer at home after catching Kazuma Okamoto's fly ball; he doubled over in pain and was removed from the game.

The club added veteran reserve outfielder Derek Hill, acquired in trade from the Chicago White Sox, to the active roster and also recalled outfield Gabriel Rincones Jr. from Class AAA Lehigh Valley. Hill, who was originally drafted in the 2014 first round by club president Dave Dombrowski when Dombrowski was in Detroit, joins his fifth team in three seasons.

He brings excellent speed and defense to the Phillies, though his 57 plate appearances received last season between Chicago and the Miami Marlins was a career high. Rincones, a consensus top 10 Phillies prospect, replaces Steward Berroa, who is on the paternity list, on the active roster.

García was non-tendered by the Texas Rangers in the offseason and signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Phillies. He hit a career-high 39 homers in 2023 and was named ALCS MVP that season as the Rangers went on to a World Series title.
