Nathan Davies, 32, ate 15 fish fingers in one minute after promising to break a world record on The 1% Club
A man has broken a world record for eating 15 fish fingers in 60 seconds - after making the promise on a gameshow.
Nathan Davies, 32, from Westhoughton, Bolton, claimed the Guinness World Records title for scoffing the most fish fingers in a minute after vowing to do so to Lee Mack, the host of ITV's The 1% Club.
The dad of two, who took home £98,000 after winning the show, said he "always has 20 fish fingers in the freezer, so I thought, that one sounds achievable".
Davies said he believed he could have eaten more if he had been able to let them cool down, adding: "I'm just happy to have the record."
1% Club winner sets world record for eating 15 fish fingers in minute
Davies, who works as a project manager, told BBC Radio Manchester when he decided to apply to be a contestant on The 1% Club he had only ever watched the ITV quiz show once before - adding his brother would often send him the questions.
But when he began watching episodes to prepare for his debut on the quiz show, he said he realised he needed to come up with a gimmick, to make himself stand out among the other contestants.
"I thought, I'm not the world's most exciting person, I need to come up with something that's going to stand out," he said.
"Because usually people have got something a bit ridiculous or a bit out there to say about themselves,
"So I thought, well, I can eat. I'll say I'll do a world record in that sense."
Davies was called out by show host, Lee Mack, during the filming of his episode, and promised to attempt a world record after the show.
Later on, Davies ended up winning the quiz show, after answering a question only 1% of the public were able to answer, according to the gameshow.
"I had to get my jacket dry cleaned at the end of it," he said.
"I was so sweaty. The whole last minute of it is all just a blur."
Davies said he had taken part in competitive eating challenges before taking on the world record attempt
Davies said he settled on fish fingers for his eating challenge, as the food item is a staple in his household, where he has two children, aged one and two.
"It all came about because I eat quite a lot and my brother-in-law asked me how fast can I eat a box of Mini Milks," Davies explained.
"That was how it all started, so then we thought, we'll check if there's a world record for them.
"I've always got 20 fish fingers in the freezer, so I thought, that one sounds achievable.
"They're bland, they're not horribly chewy, that sounds all right."
Davies said part of the conditions of the world record achievement were that he was not allowed to put sauce on the fish fingers, and that he needed to use a fork.
He said he also had to eat the fish fingers out of a clear container so that the world record adjudicator could see clearly there was nothing being "swapped out" during the process.
