Real Madrid star will have final say on whether he leaves this summer

After a frantic start to the summer in terms of signings, Real Madrid will start to focus more on outgoings in the coming weeks. One position where there will be an exit is left-back, given that Marc Cucurella’s arrival means there are now four first team players fighting for one spot in Jose Mourinho’s starting line-up.

That spot will be Cucurella, which means that Alvaro Carreras, Fran Garcia and Ferland Mendy are all battling to be the former Chelsea man’s understudy. Thus, there is scope for at least one to leave, and while Garcia is the expected candidate, there have been growing reports of a possible departure for Carreras.

Last summer, Carreras joined in a €50m transfer from Benfica. He was projected to be the starter, but after Xabi Alonso was sacked, he lost his place, and he could drop down to third or fourth choice in the pecking order if he stays. As per Sergio Valentín (via MD), this has already been communicated to him by Mourinho, which is why he has been told that he can leave if that is his desire.

Alonso wants Carreras reunion at Chelsea

Notably, Carreras has been linked with a move to Chelsea in the last few weeks, with their new head coach Alonso keen to be reunited with the player he signed last summer. The Premier League side would be able to offer him a starting spot, and this will surely come into his thinking when he decides on a Real Madrid exit.

Cashing in on Carreras could be wise for Real Madrid to do. Cucurella is only 27, so he is very capable of being the club’s regular starter for several years to come, which is why it would make little sense to keep a high-value asset as his deputy at this time.
