William Byron’s Frustration Boils Over in Heated Radio Exchange During EchoPark Race

Article excerpt

William Byron didn't hide his frustration with his race car during Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race, leading to a heated radio exchange with crew chief Rudy Fugle before lightning brought the event to a halt.

William Byron was clearly unhappy with the handling of his No. 24 Chevrolet before severe weather brought Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at EchoPark Speedway to a halt.

Running 19th as the field battled for position, Byron vented over the radio about what he felt was an uncompetitive race car.

“This is junk. Absolutely [expletive] junk,” Byron said.

Crew chief Rudy Fugle acknowledged the frustration while also reminding his driver that lightning was approaching the speedway.

“Copy that, yep do what you can. Lightning is close, not quite halfway.”

Byron wasn’t finished.

“Plowing my [expletive] off, this is terrible,” he replied.

Fugle answered bluntly.

“I [expletive] heard ya, okay? I got it.”

After additional radio traffic that was difficult to make out on the broadcast, Fugle delivered one final message.

“Just drive the [expletive] thing.”

“You got it,” Byron responded.

Byron Struggled Before Lightning Stopped the Race

The exchange came before NASCAR displayed the red flag because of nearby lightning, pausing the Quaker State 400 Available at Walmart before the race reached its halfway point.

At the time of the radio conversation, Byron was mired outside the top 15 after starting 26th and was unable to make significant forward progress as the handling issues continued.

Whether the delay ultimately gives the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports team an opportunity to regroup remains to be seen once the race resumes, but Byron’s radio traffic made it clear just how frustrated he had become with his car during the opening portion of Sunday’s event.

William Byron Entered EchoPark Just Outside the Top 10 in Points

Byron entered Sunday night’s race at EchoPark Speedway 12th in the NASCAR Cup Series standings with 499 points through 19 races.

The Hendrick Motorsports driver had yet to win in 2026, but he had recorded four top-five finishes, nine top-10s and 136 laps led. He also entered the weekend 265 points behind standings leader Denny Hamlin.

Byron’s winless season added more weight to the frustration heard over the radio. With the regular season moving deeper into its second half, the No. 24 team needed a stronger night at EchoPark to build momentum and improve its position before the Chase.
