Big question facing Colts linebacker unit entering training camp

Article excerpt

With training camp quickly approaching, let's take a look at the big question facing the Colts' linebacker unit.

With training camp drawing closer, we will be highlighting the one big question that faces each of the Indianapolis Colts' position groups.

Up next is the linebacker unit, which has quite a few question marks, but none bigger right now than identifying who starts and what the depth chart looks like.

Who starts at linebacker for the Colts, and what can we expect from this new-look position group?

Presumably, CJ Allen will be the Colts' starting MIKE linebacker. But even if things play out that way, we still don't know who will be starting next to him.

Based on what we learned during offseason programs, Akeem Davis-Gaither, Bryce Boettcher, and Jaylon Carlies are all in the mix, with each player seeing playing time with the starters.

Davis-Gaither is by far the most experienced of the group and spent several seasons playing under Lou Anarumo in Cincinnati. But ESPN's Stephen Holder identified Boettcher as someone who could make a "legitimate push to start." Carlies, a former college safety, can bring an added coverage presence to this position.

A priority this offseason for GM Chris Ballard was that he wanted to get younger and faster on defense, which he was able to accomplish at linebacker. But with this being a relatively young group overall, does that lead to consistent play?

That is the other big question here, along with trying to determine how the depth chart will shake out. Ultimately, we won't have that answer until we see this group in action.

Anarumo's disguise-heavy scheme can perhaps give the linebacker unit a boost, not to mention that this position group will be surrounded by what should be a high-end secondary, all of which can help put the linebackers in a position to be successful.
