Justice James Wayne Dies in 1867; Quordle Puzzle July 6
Article excerpt
Two items from the calendar of American life, separated by 158 years. On July 5, 1867, Justice James Wayne died, ending a 32-year tenure on the Supreme Court that made him one of the longest-serving justices of the 19th century. Wayne, a Georgia native appointed by Andrew Jackson in 1835, was one of the rare Southern justices who remained loyal to the Union during the Civil War, a stance that led Georgia to declare his seat vacant and cost him his property in Savannah. He died in Washington while still technically holding his seat, the last active justice to do so for many decades. On the lighter end of the historical spectrum, Monday's Quordle puzzle arrived with its usual four-word challenge for the word-game faithful. Quordle, which asks players to solve four five-letter words simultaneously in nine guesses, has built a devoted daily following since its viral moment in early 2022. Hints and answers for the July 6 edition circulated widely for players who needed a nudge before the day got away from them.
