Barcelona could explore the market for a new defender amid uncertainty over captain’s situation
According to Mundo Deportivo, FC Barcelona are preparing to activate defensive contingency plans in the summer transfer window, with club captain Ronald Araujo’s long-term status at the club plunged into deep uncertainty.
While the Uruguayan defender has always maintained his desire to stay at the Spotify Camp Nou, his diminishing role under manager Hansi Flick could ultimately accelerate an unexpected exit.
The defensive hierarchy
The sporting department’s stance has shifted due to the rapid consolidation of alternative options in the backline. Teenage sensation Pau Cubarsi and the versatile Eric Garcia are now considered entirely untouchable within Flick’s blueprint.
Moreover, Gerard Martin has firmly established himself as an option at centre-back after his impressive performances during the last season partnering Cubarsi.

Furthermore, veteran Danish international Andreas Christensen has firmly secured his future in Catalonia, officially penning a two-year contract renewal that binds him to the club until June 2028.
It leaves Araujo in a bit of a difficult position, even more so considering that he will start pre-season training later than the likes of Martin and Christensen, after having not played at the World Cup at all due to an injury.
The market trigger
All this has directly impacted Araujo’s leverage. After a difficult domestic season headlined by a mental health break which led to a drop in the selection pecking order, the captain faces the prospect of limited minutes.
So, even though he has maintained that he wishes to stay, a lack of minutes in the pre-season could quickly change his situation.

Senior club officials have made it clear that if Araujo grows unsettled by a peripheral role and decides to seek a transfer away, Barcelona will not hesitate to sanction a sale.
Should the captain choose to leave, Barça’s sporting director Deco will immediately activate the signing of a first-team-ready centre-back.
As things stand, that appears to be the only scenario wherein the La Liga champions will consider reinforcing the centre-back position this summer.
Backed by a massive €210 million institutional loan secured to facilitate major operations this summer, the Catalan side possesses the necessary financial liquidity to instantly launch a heavy market bid.
