Commute: Mizzou Baseball Picks Up First Transfer Portal Commitment

Article excerpt

Missouri baseball secured its first commitment through the transfer portal, marking a step forward in coach Barry Odom's rebuilding effort. The Tigers, coming off a disappointing season, are actively pursuing portal acquisitions to strengthen their roster for the upcoming campaign. The unnamed recruit represents the program's initial success in the increasingly competitive transfer market, where established programs vie for proven talent from other schools. This move signals Mizzou's aggressive approach to roster construction as college baseball programs pivot toward portal recruitment as a primary pathway to improvement.

Welcome to the Morning Commute

Today we’re talking about Mizzou Baseball

After a recent run of players transferring away from the program, Mizzou Baseball picked up their first transfer portal commitment on Wednesday from Florida Gulf Coast infielder Wilfred Gonzalez.

Gonzalez was a major contributor on FGCU, ranking fourth on the team with a .323 batting average helping the Eagles to a 36-22 overall record this season. His defense also stood out, leading the team with 101 assists and 66 putouts.

Former FGCU infielder Wilfred Gonzalez commits to #Mizzou baseball.

Led the Eagles with 101 fielding assists, along with 66 putouts in 2026. He totaled 69 hits, 34 runs & 26 RBI over 223 plate appearances with a .323 batting average on the season.

More from our Sophie Silvers, Gonzalez looks to only have one more year of eligibility:

As an incoming senior, Gonzalez provides Mizzou with a a heavy approach that will hopefully translate well against elite SEC arms.

There’s certainly more work to do for Kerrick Jackson and the staff, so stay tuned for all of our baseball offseason coverage.

Morning Commute from True Deck: Border War date set for Mizzou-Kansas men’s basketball

The news was announced when the Jayhawks released their nonconference schedule. The game will be held at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City on Dec. 6.

Should be a fun one on December 6th, but I hate that it’s on yet another Sunday (should be on a Saturday!)

Recruiting Reset from Josh Matejka: Is Chris Harris Jr. a phenom in the making?

Harris’s game is already developed enough that he could reasonably be expected to compete for game time. If he can raise some elements of his skill set in the year before he hits campus, we could be looking at a freshman phenom.

Chris Harris Jr. was a huge, in-state recruiting win for Mizzou Football.

BREAKING NEWS from Karen Steger: Mizzou Gym hires former UGA assistant Oleksii Koltakov

NEW! from me at @RockMNation: BREAKING NEWS, #Mizzou Gym hires former UGA assistant Oleksii Koltakovhttps://t.co/CSPsxvq7iP

On Wednesday afternoon, Shannon & Co. announced the hiring of former Georgia and Nebraska assistant (and former Ukrainian national team member) Oleksii Koltakov, who earned WCGA Co-Regional Assistant Coach of the Year honors in 2023. With that recent honor, he’s sure to fit right in with the other WCGA coaches of the year on the Tigers’ staff.

Koltakov seems to be a big-time addition to the Mizzou Gymnastics’ staff. Plenty of experience to be excited about.

From Sophie Silvers: Mizzou Baseball Welcomes New Addition as Future Roster Takes Shape

Gonzalez brings an elite bat to the Tigers’ lineup after putting together a stellar season for the Eagles.

Gonzalez might be what Mizzou Baseball desperately needs.
