Marcelo Mayer a late add to Red Sox lineup again Friday; Carlos Narváez catching in Seattle

Article excerpt

The Red Sox begin a six-game road trip out west Friday night, and will do so without Marcelo Mayer in the lineup.

UPDATE:About 35 minutes before first pitch, the Red Sox released a new lineup that has Marcelo Mayer at shortstop, and not Isiah Kiner-Falefa.

Mayer, after being left out of the original order, will start at shortstop and hit seventh, according to the team. He is apparently good to go after flying to Seattle on Friday morning, a day after the team charter left for the West coast.

According to the club, Kiner-Falefa, who has started 19 games in a row at various positions, was scratched with left forearm inflammation. The veteran hit a key homer in the eighth inning of Thursday’s loss to Toronto.

The Red Sox begin a six-game road trip out west Friday night, and will do so without Marcelo Mayer.

Mayer is out of the lineup for the second straight day with Isiah Kiner-Falefa playing shortstop and Andruw Monasterio starting at second base for the second straight day. Mayer has been under the weather, a source said Friday, and he flew separately from the club to Seattle. Mayer had started 15 of 20 games at shortstop before missing Tuesday’s 4-3 loss to Toronto.

Facing tough righty Bryce Miller, the Red Sox will use a similar lineup to the one they used Thursday. Mickey Gasper will lead off as the designated hitter with Kiner-Falefa hitting sixth, third baseman Caleb Durbin hitting seventh and Carlos Narvaez starting at catcher Connor Wong, who played Thursday. Monasterio is hitting ninth.

On the mound for Boston will be lefty Ranger Suarez, who has a 2.48 ERA and 65 strikeouts in his last 11 starts dating back to April 11. Suarez has made one career start in Seattle, back in 2022.

The Red Sox, who are riding a four-game losing streak after being swept by the Blue Jays at home, will open the first of four series in the Pacific Time Zone in the next six weeks. This trip takes them to Denver for three-games against the Rockies starting Monday.

First pitch is at 10:10 p.m. ET and the game will be on NESN.
