Ukraine pushed Russia back in May for second month running, ISW finds

Ukraine recaptured more territory than it lost to Russian forces in May, the second consecutive month of net gains, according to the Institute for the Study of War. The turnaround stems from successful tactical counterattacks and a ramped-up campaign of long-range missile and drone strikes deeper into Russian territory, which have slowed Russia's advance in Eastern Ukraine. ISW's Russia Deputy Team Lead Christina Harward credited these dual strategies with shifting momentum on the ground.
