Never Too Late: Queer Romance Novels with Later-in-Life Coming Out Plots
Article excerpt
Celebrate Pride with these heartfelt romances starring characters with later-in-life coming out journeys.
There was a time not too long ago when it felt like all the traditionally published queer books were about coming out. Often these were tragic or emotionally devastating stories that could leave readers feeling hopeless and heartbroken. We begged for a wider scope of queer stories, and slowly a more diverse group of LGBTQ+ books across genres, topics, and identities began to emerge. As the publishing world reacts to political change and takes steps backwards, we must continue to demand a wide variety of queer stories.
But in truth, I have a soft spot for coming out stories. It’s a process that many (but not all) LGBTQ+ people experience. Coming out can be scary, but it can also be joyful, gratifying, and empowering. It’s one of those pivotal life moments when you know intrinsically that afterwards, nothing will ever be the same. Later-in-life coming out stories can be harder to find, but they’re a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to embrace your truth and live authentically. So even as we embrace a wider breadth of queer narratives, I hope coming out stories are here to stay. Here are few phenomenal queer romances that feature later-in-life coming out plots, with characters over 30 stepping into the rainbow spotlight.
5 Later-in-Life Coming Out Romances
Every Step She Takes by Alison Cochrun
Nothing forces you to confront your latent queerness like a surprise last-minute backpacking trip through Europe with a bunch of queers. Thirty-five-year-old Sadie hasn’t taken a break from her family business for years, which has proved a perfect distraction from confronting her own sexuality and loneliness. When her influencer sister gets injured and can’t take her planned trip to Portugal, she convinces Sadie to take her place in a group tour hiking the Camino de Santiago. But she doesn’t tell Sadie that it’s a tour specifically for queer women, one of whom Sadie finds herself drawn to on the plane before they even arrive. Alison Cochrun writes tender, heartwarming queer romances that I always adore, and this one features a particularly unforgettable coming out story.
Love is a Contact Sport by Frederick Smith
This gorgeous second-chance romance features two characters who fell for each other in college but had to wait 20 years for their love story to really take off. Brent was a closeted freshman basketball player when he was assigned to out-and-proud Renny’s orientation group, and the spark between them was undeniable. Two decades later, Brent is recently divorced and ready to live openly. When he runs into Renny at a college reunion, their old spark roars back to life. It’s an emotional, sexy, joyful story with two characters who will carve out a permanent place in your heart.
The Secret Crush Book Club by Karmen Lee
Queer book lovers will be delighted by this book-centric romance with a heartfelt later-in-life coming out plot. Dani is a single mom who’s tired of putting everyone else’s needs above her own. Looking to make some new friends and explore new hobbies, she joins a book club run by librarian Zoey. Little does Dani know that Zoey is also secretly an author who wrote some of Dani’s favorite books. As Dani and Zoey bond over reading love stories, their own love story starts to blossom.
Role Playing by Cathy Yardley
Empty-nester Maggie accepts her son’s challenge to make new friends and decides to join a virtual gaming guild. She quickly bonds with the guild’s leader Aiden, but she assumes he’s her son’s age. Meanwhile Aiden assumes Maggie is the same age as his elderly mother. When they eventually meet in person and realize they’re both around 50, they wonder if their online connection could turn into something wonderful IRL. Throughout the book, Aidan comes out as bisexual and demisexual, and his journey is just as touching as his love story with Maggie.
The Secret Life of Albert Entwistle by Matt Cain
Albert was content with his life, living alone with his cat and working as a postman. But when he’s unexpectedly pushed to retire just before his 65th birthday, Albert isn’t sure where he fits into the world anymore. He bravely decides to start living his truth and find the man he fell in love with decades prior, hoping it’s not too late to reignite their flame. It’s a powerful story about opening your heart and finding a whole new world awaits you.
