The olm, a pale salamander found only in the underground waters of southeastern Europe, is completely blind. Its eyes never fully developed, leaving them useless in the eternal darkness of the limestone caves where it lives. Instead of sight, the olm relies on extraordinarily sensitive smell and hearing to navigate and hunt in its subterranean world.

This strange creature lives its entire life underwater in the karst regions beneath the Dinaric Alps, spanning from Italy to Bosnia and Herzegovina. It eats, sleeps, and breeds in these flooded caverns, never venturing to the surface. The olm's body reflects its lightless existence: its skin lacks pigmentation, appearing ghostly white, and it retains external gills throughout its life like a perpetual tadpole. Its limbs are reduced to three toes on the front feet and only two on the hind feet.

When heavy rains flood the underground system, olms occasionally wash up into the outside world, startling the people living above. In 1689, a naturalist named Valvasor first documented this phenomenon, reporting that locals believed these pale, eyeless creatures were the offspring of a cave dragon. Today, the olm remains one of Europe's most remarkable animals, a living reminder of how life adapts to the most extreme and isolated environments on Earth.
