Ancient sea assassins with clubs

Mantis shrimp are marine hunters armed with raptorial appendages that either form heavily mineralized clubs striking with tremendous force or sharp grasping forelimbs for swift seizures. Ancient Assyrians called them "sea locusts," while Australians named them "prawn killers." These carnivorous crustaceans evolved 400 million years ago and now inhabit over 520 species across shallow tropical waters, making them apex predators despite spending most of their secretive lives sheltering in burrows.
