First Quarter Moon Brightens June Skies

First Quarter Moon Brightens June Skies

Tonight the Moon sits at First Quarter, about 65% lit and rising well into the evening. This bright phase is great for lunar features and casual stargazing, but it will wash out fainter stars and meteors until it sets. If you're serious about spotting every star, the darker nights around the New Moon are your best bet. For now, enjoy the Moon's own craters and highlands with binoculars or a small telescope. The Perseids meteor shower is still about seven weeks away, peaking around August 12. When that night arrives, plan to watch after midnight in a dark location away from lights. Let your eyes adjust for a full 20 minutes before you start counting. A moonless or very young crescent Moon will help you see more meteors, so choose your night wisely. The darker your sky, the more meteors you'll catch.
