June Skies: Full Moon and Summer Stars

Tonight you'll see a brilliant Full Moon, nearly 99% illuminated, lighting up the evening sky beautifully. The trade-off is that all this moonlight will wash out fainter stars and make the night sky less dramatic for deep stargazing. If you want to see the Milky Way or hunt for dim objects, wait for nights when the Moon is lower on the horizon or not yet risen.

Looking ahead, the Perseids meteor shower will peak around August 12, about 44 days away. When that night arrives, try to find a dark spot away from porch lights, let your eyes adjust for about 20 minutes, and look up to watch meteors streak across the sky. The darker your location and the moonless your sky, the more meteors you'll spot. For now, enjoy the Full Moon's glow and the bright stars that shine through it.
