Marvel Confirms Iron Man's New Era Will Begin Sooner Than Fans Expected

With the Avengers headed toward Armageddon, Iron Man is going from “invincible” to “incarcerated” as Marvel takes the hero down a very dark and desolate path, but is he heading toward redemption?

Rounding out the Avengers: Armageddon San Diego Comic-Con panel, Marvel revealed a promo poster with an ominous tagline that read: “The Future is Iron,” suggesting that the imprint will have big plans for the hero in 2027. The 700th issue, celebrating the hero’s long run, which first started in the 60s, is fast approaching and proves that indeed Iron Man is far from rusting or becoming obsolete as yesterday’s model.

Beginning with Issue #12 of Iron Man, the “Incarcerated Iron Man” and “War Machines” arcs will be written by Joshua Williamson and are slated to launch in December and continue through 2027, published by Marvel Comics.

The announcement came at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, which focused on the future of its line of Marvel Comics, as much as its other media projects, including its live-action and animated features. Marvel announced two arcs that will dominate the Iron Man line of comics, hitting shelves in December 2026 (coincidentally around the launch of Avengers: Doomsday ) and running well into 2027.

Williamson has been teasing the set-up of “Iron Man Incarcerated,” which will have Tony Stark sent to “The Vault,” the Marvel Universe’s maximum security prison, and the storyline will run parallel with “War Machines” beginning in Iron Man #13. Details have been scarce, but one thing that did get out into the ether is that there will be significant casualties at the conclusion of Avengers: Armageddon .

The legend of Iron Man has only increased over the years, and exploded since actor Robert Downey, Jr. embodied the role, launching the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since his startling debut in Tales of Suspense #39 (1962) and the hero’s subsequent founding of the mighty Avengers, Tony Stark has remained one of Marvel’s pillars. 2026 is promising to shake things up and will close with Iron Man in prison.

The two arcs appearing in Iron Man beginning in December will run tangent to one another, with James Rhodes once again stepping in to take over Stark's legacy . With Tony behind bars, for the time being, Rhodes will lead “War Machines,” a strike team of armored iron warriors that will take up the slack. Further teasing big events for Iron Man in 2027, Marvel issued promo art with provocative messaging.

It’s been a long haul for Tony Stark. Over a resounding career in superheroics that has seen him evolve his arsenal, battle his own personal demons, and share a legacy with longtime confidante James Rhodes, giving rise to the first inevitable Armor Wars. Stark has also been at the center of major seismic shifts in the Marvel Universe, including “Civil War,” and was resurrected after “dying” in its sequel.

With the Avengers facing major upheaval this year in the upcoming event arc “Armageddon,” there will be some serious fallout facing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and Iron Man might well find himself at Ground Zero courtesy of Iron Man scribe Joshua Williamson. Yes, Tony Stark is back, and starting with Iron Man #12, he goes from “invincible” to “incarcerated” in a brand new, life-altering storyline with art by Carmen Carnero.

The Incarcerated Iron Man will release on Dec. 12, 2027, and War Machines will also release in Dec. 2027.
