Comics to Keep Your Brain From Melting Over the Summer

Article excerpt

These science, history, philosophy, and literature-focused graphic novels will get you well-read and learning this summer!

Summer vacation means time off from school and, for many of us, off work, too. But that doesn’t mean it’s time to stop learning! Graphic novels are a fun way to keep those little gray cells strong and well-fed. Here are a few educational comics that make learning feel like vacation time.

If you’re interested in science, why not check out Poking the Squid by Perrin Roosevelt Ireland? This often explicit, always amusing book not only, ahem, exposes readers to the many and varied ways animals have sex, it also explores how the prejudices of human scientists have affected the study of animal (and human) sexuality and gender. Or, for something you can share with younger readers, check out Elise Gravel’s work! Books like Club Microbe, about the wonderful world of germs, and The Mushroom Fan Club, about what fun guys fungi are, serve as a colorful introduction to science-y topics.
