Diabetes substantially increases mortality risk for organ transplant recipients, analysis reveals
Article excerpt
Organ transplant recipients with diabetes face significantly higher mortality rates than their non-diabetic counterparts, according to a comprehensive analysis presented at ENDO 2026 in Chicago. The study examined solid-organ transplant patients and found that whether diabetes developed after transplantation or existed beforehand, the metabolic disease substantially increased the risk of death. The findings, presented at the Endocrine Society's annual meeting, add to growing evidence that managing diabetes becomes particularly critical for transplant patients, whose immune systems are already compromised by immunosuppressive medications needed to prevent organ rejection.
