Marvel Teased Scarlet Witch's MCU Return in Avengers: Doomsday

Marvel Studios revealed several brilliant secrets about the MCU at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, including the possible return of the Scarlet Witch four years after she died in Avengers: Doomsday . Marvel's presentations in SDCC's Hall H packed a punch this year, with Black Panther III being given a release date and a new lead star in David Jonsson, while Ryan Gosling was also confirmed to be the MCU's Ghost Rider, coming in 2028.

The majority of Marvel's presentation at SDCC was focused on Avengers: Doomsday , however, with a new trailer for the Russo Brothers' upcoming crossover event being shown, and costumes from the movie being put on display. This includes the outfits of Sam Wilson's Captain America (Anthony Mackie), Remy LeBeau's Gambit (Channing Tatum), and even Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) himself, but another costume reveal might confirm the return of one of the MCU's most beloved and interesting characters.

In the days leading up to Marvel's Hall H panel, a costume was put on display at SDCC belonging to a Latverian witch. The costume was clearly inspired by Doctor Doom's own suit of armor, with a green bodice, a green cloak, and a metallic mask, though one much smoother and more refined than that worn by Doom in Avengers: Doomsday's trailers. The reveal of the witch means Doomsday will flesh out more of Latveria and perhaps explore Doom and his mother's histories with sorcery.

In the following days, the color of the Latverian witch's costume changed from green to orange, and then to purple, perhaps teasing the introduction of several different witches standing next to Doctor Doom in the MCU's Phase 6 . The changing colors have prompted theories about the identity of the witch, or indeed witches. Some have suggested the colors correlate to the palettes of Agatha All Along's witches, green for Death (Aubrey Plaza), orange for Lilia Calderu (Patti LuPone), purple for Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn).

The colors may also correlate to individual Infinity Stones, which are missing from Earth 616 after being atomized by Thanos (Josh Brolin) in Avengers: Endgame , but could still exist in Doctor Doom's reality. There are any number of characters who could become Doctor Doom's witch companions in Avengers: Doomsday , including formidable sorcerers such as Clea (Charlize Theron), the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), and more, but one theory prevails over all others.

The most prominent theory as to who could be sporting the costume in Avengers: Doomsday names Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) as the Latverian witch. Maximoff was introduced as a villain in Avengers: Age of Ultron before becoming an Avenger and a fugitive in Captain America: Civil War. She helped bring down Thanos during the Battle of Earth, but losing Vision (Paul Bettany) pushed her to the limits, as WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness explored her descent into true villainy.

After becoming the Scarlet Witch in WandaVision and using the Darkhold to massacre the Illuminati on Earth 838 in Multiverse of Madness , Maximoff saw the error of her ways. She sacrificed herself while destroying the Darkhold Castle on Mount Wundagore and erasing the Book of the Damned from across the multiverse, and she has since been confirmed to be officially dead. Even so, there have been calls for the Scarlet Witch to return over the last four years, and Doomsday is the perfect place.

Doctor Doom has already been confirmed to be a powerful sorcerer in Avengers: Doomsday , having learned these skills from his witch mother, Cynthia Von Doom, and their tribe in Latveria. The SDCC trailer for Avengers: Doomsday showed off some of Doom's magical power, as he resurrects several destroyed Sentinels on the battlefield with his green magic, but he could be seeking even more power in Doomsday from some of the MCU's other biggest magic users, including the Scarlet Witch.

Wanda Maximoff is no doubt the most prominent and powerful witch in the MCU's history, apparently destined to either rule the world or destroy it. This prophecy makes her a clear candidate for the Latverian witch, as Doctor Doom may want to claim her remarkable power for himself. Additionally, there is precedent for Maximoff and Doom being connected in Marvel Comics, making the Scarlet Witch's return in Avengers: Doomsday even more likely.

There have been many theories about how the Scarlet Witch could return to the MCU despite her death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness , many of which latched onto a conveniently timed flash of red energy in the crumbling Darkhold Castle that made some suspect Maximoff may have teleported away or survived somehow. Given her affinity with "dream-walking," it's possible she hopped into an alternate reality, which is where we might find her alongside Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday .

After descending into villainy and decimating the world's mutant population in Marvel Comics' House of M event in 2005, Wanda Maximoff escapes to the fictional southeast European country of Transia, where she uses her own powers to block her memory of her true identity. While some heroes confirm she has no memory of her previous life and poses no danger, choosing to leave her be, Doctor Doom finds her and takes her to Latveria, where they become engaged.

Doctor Doom had previously wanted to use Wanda Maximoff as a formidable weapon by tapping into the Life Force, increasing her power a hundredfold and allowing her to alter reality, causing the Avengers Disassembled and House of M events. After the devastation, Doom found Maximoff and manipulated her again, convincing her to be his bride, but she eventually regains her memories when her reincarnated sons, Wiccan and Speed, and more Young Avengers find her.

The introduction of Wiccan (Joe Locke) and Speed (Ruaridh Mollica) in Agatha All Along and the upcoming VisionQuest , respectively, sets up this storyline perfectly. Other Young Avengers have also appeared in the MCU , but we're still waiting for the team to officially form. If this happens in VisionQuest or Avengers: Doomsday , now is the perfect time to bring the Scarlet Witch back to the MCU, and bringing her back under the disguise of the Latverian witch companion to Doctor Doom would mirror her comic history.
