Study suggests testosterone therapy in men may be overprescribed, inconsistent with clinical guidelines
Article excerpt
A University of Michigan study presented at the Endocrine Society's annual meeting found that most men prescribed testosterone therapy never received proper diagnostic testing aligned with clinical guidelines. Researchers examined prescribing patterns and discovered only a small fraction of patients underwent appropriate workups before starting treatment. The findings suggest widespread overprescribing and inconsistency with established medical standards for testosterone replacement. The study, led by clinical assistant professor Sophia Sinha, raises questions about whether doctors are adequately evaluating patients before initiating hormone therapy.
