Stem cell embryo models could unlock infertility clues beyond 14-day research limit
Article excerpt
An international team of embryologists and bioethicists has published the first comprehensive guidelines for using stem cell-based embryonic models in reproductive research. Led by UPF researcher Alfonso Martínez-Arias, the white paper bridges developmental biology, ethics, and law to propose how these models could help scientists understand infertility, work currently constrained by the 14-day research limit on actual human embryos. The guidelines aim to govern both basic research and the development of reproductive technologies, offering a framework that balances scientific opportunity with ethical oversight.
