What's the latest on the Commanders' pursuit of a free-agent receiver?

Article excerpt

Will the Commanders add a veteran receiver before Week 1? Maybe not.

Stefon Diggs, Brandon Aiyuk over and over....

That's what we have heard, read, and watched since the draft regarding the Washington Commanders. The consensus was that the Commanders would sign one of these two receivers. Well, there is still another receiver out there who remains unsigned and available. That receiver is Kennan Allen.

Allen turned 34 in April, and perhaps that might be the chief reason Allen remains unsigned. Allen has remained one of the more respected receivers in the NFL for some time regarding his value to the locker room. It would be interesting to learn if 'diva' and Keenan Allen have ever been used in the same sentence.

Listed at 6'2", 211 pounds, Allen has been able to adeptly use his size over his 171 NFL regular season games. Allen appears to have lost a step, as his yards per reception were down to 9.6 in 2025. Yes, that is one side of the coin why Allen may not be signed (age 34, only 9.6 YPR). Yet the other side of that same coin is that Allen remained durable, playing in all 17 games in 2025 and hauling in 81 receptions last season.

But then, given who the Commanders already have, they may not be interested in Allen. If they want a receiver with size, they already have Treylon Burks. In fact, Burks is also 6'2" and is bigger than Allen at 225 pounds. Secondly, Burks is younger, much younger, having turned 26 back in April. No, Burks is not going to accomplish what Allen has (1,055 receptions for 12,051 yards, 70 touchdown receptions).

Yet Commanders GM Adam Peters might be looking long-term, investing in Burks to see if he breaks out with Washington. Burks certainly has not displayed Allen's ability, though he was drafted 18th overall in 2022. Burks has been largely underperforming; that's not debatable. Yet, Burks has not displayed consistency in the NFL anywhere close to Allen's. But Allen is 34, and receivers can fall off the cliff quickly. Art Monk, Gary Clark, Ricky Sanders, Santana Moss, Charley Taylor, it simply happens to all of them...they are finite human beings with limitations.

Which brings us back to Aiyuk and Diggs. Aiyuk is only 28, while Diggs will be 33 in November. Aiyuk has raised concerns among anyone following his soap-opera summer performances on social media. In addition, we have no idea if he can even play anymore, given that he didn't rehab with the 49ers as he was supposed to, and his many videos don't show him working out currently either.

Diggs had a solid 2025 season with 85 receptions, averaging 11.9 per pass reception. This weekend Diggs proclaimed this weekend, ""My opinion, I can compete with anybody. You can't name a No. 2 better than me." Well, actually I can, 'Tee Higgins.' But I will give it to Diggs; he continues to produce. Since 2018, over 1,000 yards receiving each season, except for the 2024 season when he was injured.

All this speculation, all this fuss, and it is July 13, and Peters has yet to make a move at receiver. Might Peters have already decided to simply go with the receivers he has? After all the fuss we have raised, time we have spent talking to receivers?

Training camp kicks off as rookies report July 24, followed by veterans on July 28.
