National Log Homes Open House Month marks 15th anniversary

WASHINGTON, D.C., The Log Homes Council is celebrating National Log Home Open House Month in July. Companies that belong to the National Association of Home Builders’ Log Homes Council will be hosting model home tours, log raising demonstrations, factory tours, seminars and much more.

“This July home buyers can discover everything they need to know to make their dream log home a reality,” says Nicole Robinson, Log Homes council chair. “Many of log home owners report that merely living in a log home provides them with a sense of sanctuary and connection to Mother Nature that is calming. Coming home feels like going on vacation.”

Here are five benefits of log homes:

Lower energy costs Log home living is energy efficient, thanks to the tight building envelope that the stacked log systems create, which can lower utility bills. Well-designed, properly constructed log homes can achieve energy performance comparable or sometimes better than conventional wood-frame homes.

Durability Often admired for their resilience, well-maintained log homes can last more than 100 years. A log home that is properly maintained can last generations, and in the right conditions, centuries. The dense structure of the logs also makes these homes resilient to damage caused by high ends and flying objects.

Unique designs Log and timber are not reserved only for small cabins. Log homes are very customizable, making the design possibilities endless. This year’s winner of the Best in American Living Awards’ (BALA) Best Log Homes Design category was a custom home in Wilson, Wyoming. It features a chef’s kitchen, five covered decks, French doors and a double-sided fireplace.

Proximity to nature Since they are usually found in wooded areas, log homes offer indoor-outdoor connection. Those who live or stay in them usually engage in more outdoor activities like hiking or gardening. The wood material also means natural textures, scents and earthy colors.

Community The log and timber home community is a tight-knit group. Not everyone who lives in a log home chooses to for the same reasons, most share an appreciation for their craftmanship, a passion for sustainable living and a love of nature.

Abide by a strict code of ethics.

Grade their logs and timbers by third party agencies to ensure quality.

Provide construction manuals to ensure correct construction techniques.

Sponsor scientific studies that advance log building technologies.

Provide free information to help consumers make smart choices.
