This Personal Cooling System Saved Me from Overheating on Summer Hikes

Article excerpt

I spent a month with Shark’s new ChillPill portable fan and wasn’t convinced it was worth the price, until one feature changed my mind. Now, I can’t stop using it. The post This Personal Cooling System Saved Me from Overheating on Summer Hikes appeared first on Family Handyman.

I run hot. Always have. If everyone else is reaching for a light blanket, I’m asking to turn up the fan. And sometimes I dread summer, especially sticky, soul-sapping Midwest humidity.

But summer also means festivals, playgrounds, walks and long days outside with my toddler. Finding ways to keep us cool during this time of year is a must. I’ve tried my share of handheld and stroller fans, and most have disappointed. They’re either too weak, die halfway through an outing or have exposed blades that make me nervous around little fingers.

Then I found the Shark ChillPill. Did I wince at the price? Sure did. Am I already debating buying a second one? You bet. Here’s what changed my mind, and why this little fan has earned a permanent spot in my summer bag.

My Early Skepticism

If you’re like me, seeing a $150 price tag on a handheld fan is enough to make you laugh out loud. My immediate thought was: What could make a portable fan so special?

The Shark ChillPill promised more than your average fan. Specifically, a 3-in-1 design with a misting attachment and a personal cooling system. I was intrigued, but still skeptical.

One thing that immediately stood out was its versatility. You can wear it, hold it or set it on a surface. Most portable fans make you choose one or the other. The ChillPill is compatible with a range of accessories, making it easy to clip to a belt or bag, wear crossbody or attach a wrist loop. The catch? They’re all sold separately, which stings a bit at this price. I still wasn’t quite sold.

Then I turned it on. It came fully charged out of the box, and even on the lowest setting, I was surprised by how much air it pushed and how quiet it was. By the time I cranked it up to level 10, I was genuinely impressed. It delivered the strongest airflow I’d ever experienced from a personal fan (with the possible exception of the Dyson HushJet, which I’ll get to later), and it lasted through multiple walks and outings before needing a recharge.

There was just one thing I kept wishing it had every time I was on a long walk or hike with my kiddo: a stroller attachment.

If you’re a parent, you know the typical stroller fan is an octopus-looking one with bendy legs that slowly slide off the stroller, lose their charge halfway through a long walk, don’t move much air and somehow take up half your diaper bag. I kept thinking: If Shark made a clamp for this, it’d be a game-changer.

Then I checked the Shark website. Sure enough: the ChillPill Clamp Attachment. Strollers? Check. Wagons? Check. Bikes? Check. I ordered one immediately.

What Changed My Mind

I’m not exaggerating when I say the clamp attachment has been life-changing. Okay, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but it really has changed my day-to-day, especially during the summer.

It basically lives on my stroller (and occasionally moves to the wagon or my stationary bike during a workout). And unlike those bendy-leg stroller fans that constantly droop or fall off, this thing stays put. The clamp holds securely, the fan rotates to almost any angle while staying firmly in place, and the airflow is directed right at your face instead of dispersing into the air.

I even took my toddler’s all-terrain Veer wagon over rocky gravel trails, and the fan never budged. That was the moment I realized this was the product I’d been waiting for someone to make.

Need the fan somewhere else? It pops out of the clamp in seconds, so you can carry it with you or use it handheld. The bladeless design also means there are no spinning blades for little fingers to find, and a built-in lock switch prevents accidental button presses while you’re on the go.

If you spend your summers pushing a stroller, riding a bike, cruising in a golf cart (or really anything with handlebars or a frame to clamp onto), the attachment isn’t just a nice extra. I’d call it essential. In fact, if you’re building a baby registry, skip the typical stroller fan and put this on your list instead.

Other Reasons I Love It and Why I’d Buy Another

Would I buy another Shark ChillPill? I would, and I probably will. Yes, even at this price.

I’ve yet to find another portable fan that offers the same combination of battery life, power, versatility and thoughtful design. The ChillPill packs in multiple functions, a growing lineup of useful accessories, and a surprisingly quiet bladeless fan that puts out serious airflow. I also love how easily it pivots to direct the breeze exactly where I want it.

For me, though, the real standout is the clamp attachment. Being able to securely mount it to a stroller, workout equipment, a wagon or just about anything else, has made it one of the most-used gadgets I own during the summer.

After months of using it, it’s one of the few products I’ve reviewed that I’d happily spend my own money on again and again.

The Interchangeable Heads

I realize I haven’t said much about the interchangeable heads, and that’s because I spend most of my time using the standard fan. It’s just that good.

That said, I reach for the misting attachment more often than I expected. It combines the fan with an ultra-fine mist that’s genuinely refreshing. And unlike some misting fans, it doesn’t spit water all over you. Shark includes extra filters for the misting attachment in the box, and if you don’t want the mist, you can simply use the fan on its own. You can also choose continuous or interval misting.

The cooling plate is the attachment I use the least, but it’s a nice extra. Press it against your neck, wrist or another pulse point, and it feels like holding a cool ice pack against your skin, without the mess or condensation. I could see it being useful for anyone who experiences hot flashes or just wants an extra burst of cooling on especially hot days.

Shark ChillPill vs. Dyson HushJet

After using both the Shark ChillPill Personal Fan and Cooling System and Dyson HushJet Mini Cool for a few months, one thing is clear: these are in a different league than your average portable fan. Both deliver powerful, adjustable airflow, impressive battery life and a lineup of optional accessories.

One big difference? Price. The Dyson HushJet costs about $50 less and includes a carrying pouch, stand and wearable holder right in the box. Shark, meanwhile, includes three interchangeable heads (a standard fan, a dry-touch misting fan and a cooling plate), plus a pouch for the accessories. (Oddly, though, the fan itself doesn’t fit in the pouch.) Clips, straps and other attachments are sold separately, which can make the total cost climb quickly. That said, Shark also seems to offer a wider selection of fan accessories.

Performance is a close call. The Dyson is a touch quieter and may edge out the Shark in raw airflow. But I prefer the Shark’s overall design. It’s more compact, easier to toss into a bag, pivots easily and has a digital display that makes adjusting settings simple. I also found its battery lasted a bit longer, and the misting attachment and cooling plate give it more versatility overall.

One note on accessories: Dyson’s add-ons are generally less expensive than Shark’s, but they’ve also been harder to find in stock. I’ve been trying to buy the Dyson Grip Clip for weeks, and it’s still out of stock, so I haven’t been able to test whether it’s truly stroller-friendly.

If I had to sum it up, I’d say the Dyson HushJet is the better pick for desks, travel and everyday personal cooling. But the Shark ChillPill shines when you’re outside, on the move or ferrying kids around in the summer heat. Between the clamp attachment, interchangeable heads and more portable design, it’s the one I find myself reaching for most often.
