Are you sleep deprived? Your spit may hold answer

Researchers have identified molecular markers in saliva that distinguish between well-rested and severely sleep-deprived states, offering a potential path toward a non-invasive test for dangerous fatigue. In a study of 20 men, scientists found distinct protein differences in saliva samples collected after a full night's sleep versus 24 hours of wakefulness. The findings, published in the Journal of Proteome Research, address a critical gap: while sleep loss impairs driving ability and coordination as severely as intoxication, no clinical test currently exists to measure when someone is dangerously tired. The work represents an early step toward a practical diagnostic tool, though significant research remains before such a test could reach clinical use.
