YouTube has announced a major partnership. YouTube has been a major staple in the streaming wars, and it's now making a huge step forward.
While all the major studios have come up with their own streaming platform, they have noticed that there is strength in numbers, and many have different details that allow them to reach a bigger audience. YouTube is following suit. The streamer just announced that it's teaming up with Peacock for a new streaming bundle.
In addition to Peacock, the YouTube Premium service comes with a $15.99/month service for ad-free viewing on YouTube, the ability to exit the app on your phone and play music or videos in the background, access to YouTube music, and downloads for offline viewing.
The service noted, "YouTube Premium has always been about bringing your favorite creators, artists, and cultural moments together uninterrupted. Now, we’re pairing that ultimate viewing experience with Peacock’s expansive lineup of live sports, blockbuster Universal movies, and hit original series."
Aside from the titles available on Peacock, which also includes shows like The Five Star Weekend , Saturday Night Live, Law & Order: SVU, Love Island USA, and more, a selection of live sporting events from NBCUniversal will stream on NBC Sports’ YouTube channel.
YouTube also announced more flexibility, as it will also announce international bundles and options for subscribers to upgrade their Peacock membership, which is currently only US-based. NBCUniversal teamed up with Paramount in Europe for SkyShowtime, which won't be affected by the YouTube bundle.
While the streamer has yet to officially become one of the biggest platforms available, it's finally picking up steam. Its most recent release, the limited series The Five Star Weekend , was its biggest release ever, with over 1 billion minutes viewed in its first week.
The platform continues to grow, and will welcome Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page's new rom-com You, Me & Tuscany in August, just before it heads to Netflix this December, plus more August-hot titles like the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise, 2015's The Boy Next Door , and the Love Island Season 8 reunion.
Aside from its monthly releases, Peacock is Universal's streaming home, and will eventually be the place Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey will call home, following the success of Oppenheimer . The movie is already one of the biggest releases of the year, with over $600 million worldwide already, and it's on track to cross the $1 billion milestone.
