Spartans retain key assistant as Harvard coaching search narrows

Article excerpt

Michigan State has kept a key assistant coach on staff after he was considered for Harvard's head coaching position. The Spartans moved quickly to secure the retention before the Ivy League school could complete its search for a new leader. The assistant's decision to stay suggests Michigan State's coaching staff remains intact despite potential poaching from other programs. Harvard's coaching search continues with a narrower field of candidates as the Crimson seek to rebuild their program.

At one point in time, it appeared that Michigan State hockey was in jeopardy of losing their top assistant coach Jared DeMichiel to a head coaching position. With the Harvard head coaching position open, DeMichiel was a contender for the job.

According to a recent report from John Buccigross, the finalists for the job are out, and DeMichiel is no longer in the running. It is unclear if he withdrew himself, or if he did not make the cut, but one thing is for certain, it is a big break for the MSU program.

DeMichiel has been with Nightingale from the start, coming to East Lansing in 2022 after a very successful tenure as an assistant with UMass (2016-2022), winning a national championship in 2021. As a player at RIT, he was named the NCAA Tournament's most valuable player in 2010.

With the resume and acumen that DeMichiel has built up, a head coaching job of his own certainly looks like it is in his future, but the Spartans appear to have avoided that fate this time around.
