President Donald Trump became so enraged by photos of a small crowd at his rally kicking off the Great American State Fair that White House officials deleted the images from their social media accounts, CNN reported on Wednesday.
The overall event has drawn paltry attendance.
Last week, Trump gave a 30-minute address to commence the ongoing State Fair, where he boasted of his accomplishments ahead of the nation’s 250th birthday celebration on July 4. That speech, which he gave after most of the planned musical acts withdrew from the event, was sparsely attended.
The president is also scheduled to give a speech on Saturday, when the temperature in Washington, D.C. is expected to exceed 100 degrees. He has vowed to give a “really long speech.”
“I do not understand why we are doing this so late,” an anonymous White House official told CNN. “I’m really not sure who thought this was a good idea.”
CNN also reported that Trump was “livid” upon seeing aerial images of the crowd size at his speech last week:
Trump announced he would headline the event instead and spoke for roughly 30 minutes, most of which he spent recounting his accomplishments and boasting about America’s revival under his administration. Though he wasn’t initially aware of the size of the crowd, he later saw an aerial photo that showed acres of sparsely populated fields beyond the audience that had crowded around the stage.
The visual enraged him, the sources said, and multiple White House officials who had posted the photo deleted their posts. The revelation led to a defensive Trump lashing out on social media, claiming that the crowds were “packed to the brim.”
In May, Trump announced that he would replace the musical acts that had bailed.
“I understand Artists are getting ‘the yips’ having to do with their performance on Wednesday, so I am thinking about bringing the Number One Attraction anywhere in the World,” Trump wrote on Trith Social, “the man who gets much larger audiences than Elvis in his prime, and he does so without a guitar, the man who loves our Country more than anyone else, and the man who some say is the Greatest President in History (THE GOAT!), DONALD J. TRUMP, to take the place of these highly paid, Third Rate “Artists,” and give a major speech, rallying the Country forward like I have done ever since being President!”
