Glasner approves of Milan move but Rangnick not released by Austria yet

Article excerpt

Oliver Glasner has approved a potential move to coach AC Milan, but Austria's national team hasn't yet released him from his contract. The Rossoneri are pushing for his departure as they seek a new manager, though the timeline remains unclear pending negotiations with the Austrian Football Association. Glasner, currently Austria's head coach, represents Milan's top target to replace their departing manager.

Glasner approves of Milan move but Rangnick not released by Austria yet

Reports on Sunday claim that Oliver Glasner has given his approval to a potential move to take over as head coach of Milan, but the Rossoneri are still hoping that the Austria national team will release Ralf Rangnick, who is under consideration to take over as sporting director.

Where Milan stand in their hunt for a head coach and new directors

Milan are looking to build an entire new senior management team after parting company with head coach Massimiliano Allegri, sporting director Igli Tare, technical director Geoffrey Moncada and CEO Giorgio Furlani the day after the 2025-26 season ended.

Various candidates have been linked with the head coach role, including the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Matthias Jaissle and Arne Slot, but reports over the last week indicate that departing Crystal Palace boss Glasner is the leading candidate to take over.

Glasner has met with representatives from Milan: His most recent round of talks were on Tuesday. La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that he presented the way he would like his Milan side to play in front of Gerry Cardinale and Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the Pink Paper claims that he is now just waiting for Milan’s go-ahead to start working as head coach.

If a move to Milan does not materialise for Glasner, La Gazzetta dello Sport claims that he will take a brief sabbatical and wait for another opportunity to emerge at a ‘top’ club midway through the 2026-27 season.

USMNT head coach Pochettino, busy preparing for the 2026 World Cup, is described as Milan’s current no.2 option.

Rangnick is also busy with World Cup preparations in the Austrian camp, and recent reports claim that the Austrian FA wish to hand their head coach a new contract extension that would see him through until EURO 2028.

La Gazzetta dello Sport claims that the appointment of Glasner does not solely depend on whether or not Rangnick joins.

The current alternative option to Rangnick is former Barcelona director Ramon Planes.
