Anne Frank (1929, 1945)

At just 13 years old, Anne Frank began one of the most widely read documents in human history. Born on June 12, 1929, in Frankfurt, Germany, Anne Frank spent two years hiding with her family in a concealed Amsterdam apartment after the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. She filled her diary with sharp observations, humor, and an unwavering belief in human goodness even as persecution closed in around her. The Gestapo arrested the family in August 1944; Anne died of typhus in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in February 1945, weeks before liberation. Her father Otto, the sole family survivor, published the diary in 1947. Translated into more than 70 languages and read by tens of millions, *The Diary of a Young Girl* remains the world's most intimate witness to the Holocaust and a living argument for tolerance.
