Cigrand began rallying his students in 1885 and later published essays in Chicago newspapers pushing for a national flag holiday. His campaign outlasted him, Congress did not officially establish Flag Day until 1949, some 172 years after the Flag Resolution of 1777) was passed by the Second Continental Congress.
