Wallace independently developed the theory of natural selection while Darwin had been sitting on his own manuscript for years. The joint 1858 presentation at the Linnean Society of London finally pushed Darwin to publish On the Origin of Species just a year later, in 1859. Most people credit Darwin alone, but Wallace's parallel discovery is what forced the historic announcement.
