Andrée and two companions lifted off from the Svalbard archipelago in a hydrogen balloon named Örnen ("Eagle"), aiming to drift over the Pole. The Andrée Arctic expedition vanished almost immediately, and the men were never seen alive again, their frozen camp and diaries were not discovered until 1930, 33 years later.
