“Development Hell”

As a person who has been rounding up adaptation releases every month for years, and is constantly reading adaptation news, it’s clear that white authors get adaptation deals that actually see the light of day in massively disproportionate ways than authors from marginalized groups do. And the bit of headway that was made a handful of years back feels like it’s been wiped out, which is what Candice Frederick looked into:

“This May, Deadline highlighted the many books that have had or will see TV adaptations this year. Among them, only two were by Black authors. That disparity reignited discourse around not only the increasing dearth of Black stories on the small screen, but also the deep-rooted issue of buzzy Black books whose previously announced adaptations have quietly disappeared from the radar.”
