A single conscious percept of motion may involve billions of nerve cells working in parallel. These coalitions can form and dissolve in fractions of a second, and the entire process happens largely invisibly, accomplished before you even know it has happened.

What makes this understanding matter is that it reveals consciousness itself as something far stranger than common sense suggests. Philosophers have long puzzled over qualia: the interior, subjective experience of what it is like to be you, seeing red or feeling pain or watching movement. How does objective physical activity in the brain, neurons firing, chemicals flowing, become transformed into subjective experience? The transformation remains somewhat mysterious even to modern neuroscience, yet it is happening in your brain constantly, in those hundred-millisecond windows where the world becomes perception, where physics becomes experience. Recognizing this gap between what is actually happening in the world and what you are actually perceiving is the first step toward understanding why none of us will ever truly know what another person perceives, and why the best humans can do to understand each other is not explanation but translation.
